How storm water gets into Menifee homes
- Runoff on sloped lots. Western Menifee, Quail Valley and the hills around Audie Murphy Ranch have rolling terrain, so heavy rain moves fast across yards and driveways toward the lowest door.
- Blocked yard drains. Tract-home side yards rely on small drains that clog with leaves, gravel and summer dust. When they back up, water pools against the stucco and seeps under the slab edge.
- Roof leaks. Concrete tile roofs last a long time, but the underlayment beneath them wears out. Many 1990s and early-2000s roofs in Menifee are at that age, and leaks often show up as ceiling stains after the first big storm of the season.
- Summer thunderstorms. Monsoon moisture occasionally reaches the Inland Empire in late summer, bringing short, intense downpours and flash flooding on streets.
Outside flood water is Category 3
Water that flows in from outside picks up soil, fertilizer and sewage, so the industry treats it as contaminated. Wet carpet and pad are usually discarded rather than dried, and walls are often opened higher than the visible water line. Wear gloves and boots, and keep kids and pets away from it.
Insurance note
Standard homeowners policies generally exclude surface flooding, which needs separate flood insurance. New NFIP policies usually have a 30-day waiting period. Wind-driven rain through a storm-damaged roof is treated differently from rising water. Our cost and insurance guide covers the difference.
After the storm
- Photograph water lines on walls and any roof or fence damage before cleanup.
- Check the attic for wet insulation after a roof leak.
- Run the AC or fans only if the electrical system is safe and dry.

Questions about storm & flood cleanup
Is storm flooding covered by homeowners insurance?
Water rising from outside is usually excluded without flood insurance. Rain that enters through storm damage to the roof or windows is often covered. Your policy wording decides.
Can carpet be saved after flood water?
Carpet and pad soaked by outside water are usually replaced, because that water is considered contaminated. Clean-water leaks are different, and carpet can often be dried in place.
When is storm season in Menifee?
Most rain falls between November and March, often in a handful of big storms. Occasional summer thunderstorms can also cause local flash flooding.
